Trains in Málaga: AVE Madrid–Málaga and Cercanías C1

Málaga has two major complementary rail networks: the High-Speed Rail (AVE) connecting it to Madrid in under three hours, and the Cercanías C1 commuter line running along the Costa del Sol from the city centre to Fuengirola via the airport. Below is a complete guide to both services.

💡 Useful fact: Renfe AVE and iryo tickets include a free Cercanías journey on the day of travel (Combinado Cercanías), allowing passengers to continue by train to Málaga city centre at no extra cost from María Zambrano station. Spain was the first country in Europe with three high-speed operators competing on the same line.

💡 Tip: The Cercanías C1 train is the cheapest and fastest way to get from the airport to Málaga city centre (just 8 minutes to María Zambrano, 12 minutes to Málaga Centro-Alameda). Passengers arriving with an AVE or iryo ticket can use it free of charge on the same day thanks to the included Combinado Cercanías. Contactless payment (bank card or mobile) is available at all turnstiles via the Cronos system.
